Basahan Study (Blue Fragment 01) is an intimate original work on paper based on a fragment of Bowerbird Dreamcoat, a textile work constructed from our family’s worn and outgrown blue garments, stitched into circular basahan forms and assembled into a child-sized pair of wings.
The drawing continues my interest in the basahan — a household rag common throughout the Philippines — as a material of care, repair, reuse and transformation.
Rendered in watercolour pencil, the fragment sits somewhere between cloth, memory, pattern, remnant, talisman.
